What is the difference between SEO and AEO?
SEO covers how people find a website through search and how search engines understand its content. AEO gives particular attention to the answers that describe or cite the business. The distinction helps define measurement and review tasks within a search program.
Google describes SEO as helping search engines understand content and helping people decide whether to visit a website. Google’s SEO Starter Guide.
Here is how I would translate the comparison into a working brief:
| Planning question | Broad SEO program | Work focused on AEO |
|---|---|---|
| What are we investigating? | How customers discover and use relevant pages | How answers represent the business and reference its information |
| What do we review? | Search demand, pages, technical access, and the path to an inquiry | Customer questions, answer accuracy, supporting facts, and cited destinations |
| What gets produced? | Improved pages, technical fixes, research, and reporting | Targeted answer improvements, evidence, and records of answer visibility |
| What do we measure? | Relevant exposure, clicks, visits, and qualified inquiries | AI exposure, observed mentions, citations, and description accuracy |
| What connects the work? | A defined audience and business objective | The same audience and business objective |
These columns describe how I recommend organizing the work. They help assign responsibilities and choose the evidence needed to evaluate progress.
Why comparison guides use the labels differently
Two of the supplied comparison pages illustrate the overlap. Optimizely places Google AI Overviews among AEO’s primary channels. Semrush includes AI Overviews and AI Mode among SEO discovery features while also discussing them under AEO. Optimizely’s comparison, Semrush’s comparison.
That is a small, directly observable difference in how the two pages classify the same features. The pages were reviewed on September 14, 2026.
Google provides a clear explanation for its own product: its generative search features use the core Search ranking and quality systems, with information retrieved from the Search index. Google’s generative AI optimization guide.
When comparing proposals, ask the provider to name the feature and the proposed work. “Improve the product documentation and measure its exposure in Google AI Overviews” is a specific assignment. The brief should also identify the pages, the owner, and the reporting source.
That level of detail makes proposals easier to compare, even when vendors use different terminology.
How the work changes on an actual page
Consider a hypothetical service page for inventory software implementation. The buyer wants to know whether the service fits their systems, how much preparation is required, and who will handle the work.
Start by checking whether the page answers those questions. It should identify the systems supported, explain the implementation stages, and describe what the client needs to provide. Add links to the relevant integration details and support information.
Then review the statements individually. A passage about preparation should name the service and the required inputs. A passage about project scope should explain what the engagement includes. A timeline should identify the conditions that affect it.
For example:
“An inventory software implementation begins with a review of product records, warehouse locations, and existing integrations. The client assigns an owner for data preparation and approves the migration requirements before configuration starts.”
That hypothetical passage tells a buyer what happens and who is responsible. It can also stand on its own when someone shares it with a colleague.
The revised page should serve the full decision. Give readers the direct answer, the supporting detail, and a clear next step. Assign a specialist to check the facts before publication.
What first-party search data can tell you
One healthcare SEO project in my portfolio reported 2.74K clicks and 339K impressions in January–March 2022. In January–March 2023, it reported 39.4K clicks and 2.25 million impressions. Those matching quarters give us a useful basis for comparison. The published healthcare SEO case study.
We can express the results as clicks per 1,000 impressions:
| Period | Reported clicks | Reported impressions | Approximate clicks per 1,000 impressions |
|---|---|---|---|
| January–March 2022 | 2,740 | 339,000 | 8.1 |
| January–March 2023 | 39,400 | 2,250,000 | 17.5 |
The calculation is clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 1,000. It uses the rounded totals published in the case study. The later period produced approximately 9.4 additional clicks per 1,000 impressions, alongside the increase in total exposure.
This tells a more complete story about the aggregate result. The site received more impressions, and its overall click rate increased. Explaining the reasons for that rate change would require query, page, and position data. These figures describe organic-search performance in the two stated periods.
For an AEO project, I would apply the same discipline: identify the source, state the dates, and define the denominator. A visibility number becomes more useful when the reader can understand how it was calculated.
SEO and AEO need clearly labeled metrics
Measure search exposure, answer inclusion, website activity, and qualified inquiries separately. Each represents a different event. A clear report identifies the event, the data source, and the period measured.
Google’s dedicated generative AI performance report provides impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It supports analysis by page, country, device, and date. Search Console’s generative AI performance report.
Bing’s AI Performance dashboard reports citation activity across supported Microsoft AI experiences and select partner integrations. It includes cited-page information and sampled grounding queries. Bing’s AI Performance documentation.
Use each source for the event it documents. Put Google AI impressions on their own line. Label Bing citation counts with their source and reporting period. Record website visits and qualified inquiries using your analytics and business records.
For your own answer checks, save the exact question and observed response. Identify whether the business was named, whether a page was linked, and whether the description was accurate.
Keep those observations connected to the content plan. The monthly review should explain which pages changed, which questions the changes addressed, and what evidence supports the next decision.
What the monitoring record tells us
The monitoring summary supplied for this article records Optimizely in first place for “seo vs aeo” for four consecutive weeks. It also records Semrush in the top three throughout the monitoring period. Those observations identify two comparison pages that talk about seo vs aeo that are worth reviewing repeatedly as the results change.
The same summary marks featured-snippet ownership as unverified. People Also Ask questions were unavailable through the discovery interface across the reported runs. A responsible report keeps those fields labeled as unavailable until the underlying search features can be inspected.
Source: Junhammer’s supplied monitoring summary. Exact run dates, location, device, and a verified search-engine identity were absent from the supplied record. The positions describe that record’s observable results.
This is where the distinction between SEO and AEO becomes practical. The position history helps select competitor pages for review. Answer-level measurement adds the questions, responses, and citations needed to assess how a business appears within answers. Both records belong in the research, with their collection methods attached.
How to build a comparison you can repeat
A repeatable AEO baseline needs a fixed question set, recorded testing conditions, and a clear rule for counting results. Preserve the underlying answers so another person can review the classifications.
Here is a hypothetical measurement design. Choose 20 customer questions, check three platforms, and repeat each check three times during the baseline period. That creates 180 planned observations: 20 questions multiplied by three platforms and three repetitions.
Record each platform separately. With 60 completed observations on one platform, a linked citation in 12 answers would produce a sample citation rate of 20%. Label it as a rate within those selected questions and conditions.
If a check fails, record the failure and report how many observations were completed. Keep the platform, date, available settings, and question wording with the answer.
Repeat the same process after the approved page changes have had time to be discovered. Keep any newly added questions in a separate group until you establish their baseline.
The first report gives you a starting point. The later reports create a history of how the business appears for questions you have chosen to investigate.
Which work should receive the next budget?
Allocate the next block of work to a documented problem. A missing service explanation, an inaccessible page, and an inaccurate business description each require a different response.
Use the evidence to choose the assignment:
- If customers struggle to find an important page, investigate its discoverability and search relevance.
- If a page attracts visitors but leaves buying questions unanswered, improve its content and next step.
- If an observed AI answer misstates a capability, review the public information supporting that capability and track the error.
- If the team lacks a reliable baseline, fund the measurement setup and the data review.
- If the content relies on broad claims, collect evidence from the people and records behind the work.
For a small team, choose one priority and finish the related changes before expanding the scope. Give the project a named owner and define what completion looks like.
For a larger organization, agree on an editorial standard across the teams involved. Siteimprove’s enterprise comparison discusses extending existing content-production standards to cover AEO. Siteimprove’s enterprise SEO and AEO guide.
That standard can require a clear page purpose, reviewed facts, appropriate sources, a publication owner, and a scheduled review date. Teams can apply it to new content and to the pages already supporting the business.
Create information your business can maintain
For a combined SEO and AEO program, I would prioritize an original information asset that answers a recurring customer question. The strongest starting point is a question your team can investigate using its own records.
An implementation team could review which preparation tasks were incomplete at kickoff. A product team could document compatibility tests under stated conditions. A service business could analyze the reasons project scopes changed.
Before collecting results, define the sample and the terms. Explain which records qualify, what period they cover, and how missing information will be handled. Keep an internal record of the calculations and the review.
Publish the finding with its method. A short table and a clear explanation may be enough. State the recommendation separately so readers can distinguish the observation from your professional judgment.
Then schedule the next update. A recurring analysis creates a history the business can use for content, sales conversations, and service improvements. It also gives future articles a specific source to cite.
A practical first 90 days
Treat the first 90 days as a planning window. Adjust it to the site’s size, the available data, and the team’s implementation capacity.
During the first month, choose the business objective and collect the baseline. Identify the relevant pages, customer questions, technical dependencies, and existing evidence. Agree on the metrics and the definition of a qualified inquiry.
During the second month, implement the priority changes. Improve the selected pages, publish the first original analysis, and record the dates. Have the relevant specialists review the facts and the implementation owner verify the changes.
During the third month, review the available platform data and repeat the answer checks. Compare like periods and keep the question set consistent. Discuss the quality of incoming inquiries with the people who handle them.
Use that review to choose the next project. The evidence may support expanding a topic, improving a conversion path, correcting public business information, or extending the measurement period.
The purpose of comparing SEO vs AEO is to make those decisions clearer. You should know what the team is doing, which customer need it addresses, and how the result will be evaluated. Start with the service you want to grow and the questions buyers need answered. Build the work plan from there.
