My standard for an AEO program is straightforward: make that information available and measure what happens afterward.
What does AEO mean in practice?
AEO brings several tasks into one working process: understand customer questions, publish clear answers, provide evidence, check access, and measure visibility. The goal is for people researching your subject to encounter an accurate and useful representation of your business.
HubSpot’s AEO guide includes both frequency and accuracy in its definition of AI visibility. Accuracy deserves attention. A mention is useful only when the surrounding information helps the right person understand what you offer.
For example, imagine a company that installs inventory software for regional distributors. A useful answer might identify its supported systems and the type of implementation it handles. A vague description of the company as a general technology provider gives a buyer less to work with.
The company’s content should therefore explain the details that affect selection: compatibility, project scope, preparation, support, and cost drivers. Those details also make the page more helpful when someone visits directly.
How does an AI answer use website information?
Google describes its generative search features as using information retrieved from its Search index. It also describes query fan-out, where related searches help address different parts of a question. Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI search.
For a business owner, that suggests a useful content exercise. Take one customer question and list the information required to answer it well.
Suppose someone asks how to choose inventory software for three warehouse locations. A helpful explanation might need to cover stock transfers, permissions, reporting, integrations, and implementation. You can review your existing pages against those requirements.
Give each page a clear purpose. A product page can explain capabilities. A comparison can evaluate options against stated criteria. An implementation guide can explain preparation and responsibilities.
Then connect the pages where the next step makes sense. A reader checking an integration should be able to reach the relevant setup instructions and support details without searching the whole site.
This gives your content a coherent structure around the actual decision.
Why businesses are paying attention
AI summaries have changed the context in which people encounter search results. Pew Research Center examined browsing data from 900 U.S. adults in March 2025 and collected corresponding Google results in April. Traditional-result clicks occurred in 8% of visits associated with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one. Pew’s research on AI summaries and search behavior.
Those figures describe Pew’s historical sample. I use them as a reason to measure exposure and visits separately, with attention to the audience and question involved.
A buyer may encounter your information before reaching your website. The business still needs a useful destination when that buyer wants details, evidence, pricing, or a conversation.
Begin by identifying which customer decisions could benefit from your expertise. Check whether your website supplies enough information to support those decisions. That creates a specific assignment for the team responsible for search.
What our five-result comparison shows
The discovery comparison supplied for this series listed five publishers for “what is AEO.” HubSpot remained in the list. Four publishers replaced four others between the compared observations. That produces an 80% publisher-turnover figure for this five-result sample.
| Observation from the supplied comparison | Count |
|---|---|
| Publishers retained | 1 of 5 |
| Publishers replaced | 4 of 5 |
| Current listed publishers | 5 |
The record names AIOSEO, Vested Marketing, WG Content, and Crackle PR as the replacements. It does not record the exact observation dates, engine, location, or device. The calculation describes the supplied list and its comparison notes.
The practical lesson I take from this sample is to save the evidence behind a visibility report. A number becomes much more useful when the questions, conditions, and result set are available for review.
For your own business, start that record now. Keep the same questions in the test set long enough to make comparisons. When you add questions, record the addition separately so the overall result remains interpretable.
That history can become a useful research asset of your own.
What is the relationship between SEO, AEO, and GEO?
SEO means search engine optimization. AEO describes work focused on answers and the information used in them. GEO means generative engine optimization, a term used for visibility in generated responses. In a working brief, define the platforms, tasks, and outcomes attached to each term.
Organize the work around the website and the customer journey. Technical access, service information, product details, original research, and measurement all need an owner.
A team might use “SEO” for the overall program and “AEO” for its work on AI answer visibility. Another team might use “GEO” for the same activity. A useful proposal will make those responsibilities explicit.
For example, the brief could say that the team will improve five service pages, publish one original analysis, review AI answer accuracy for a defined question set, and report on relevant platform data. Everyone can understand and evaluate that assignment.
The terminology becomes easier to manage once the work is described clearly.
What makes an answer useful on its own?
A self-contained answer identifies its subject, answers a specific question, and includes the conditions needed to interpret it. A reader should understand the passage even when it appears without the surrounding introduction.
Here is a hypothetical example for a consulting business:
“An implementation readiness review documents the systems involved, the data owner, the migration requirements, and the acceptance criteria. The review ends with a list of decisions that must be resolved before configuration begins.”
The passage names the service, explains the work, and describes the output. You could place it in a proposal, a service page, or an answer to a customer question.
Apply the same approach to factual claims. If you report a result, keep the sample, period, and metric close to the number. If you give a recommendation, explain the situation in which you would use it.
I prefer short paragraphs because they make dense information easier to review. The length should follow the explanation. Finish the thought, include the necessary context, and move to the next point.
Build an original information source
For AEO content, start with knowledge your business can verify. Sources include completed projects, support records, product tests, delivery logs, and questions from sales conversations.
Choose one narrow question. For an implementation team, that might be: “Which preparation tasks most often remain incomplete at kickoff?”
Define the sample before counting. Decide which projects qualify, which dates apply, and how an incomplete task will be recorded. Assign one person to review ambiguous records. Keep a note of any exclusions.
The published result can be simple: a short explanation, a table, and a method note. Include the number of projects reviewed and the period covered. Describe the team’s recommendation separately from the observation.
A recurring review makes the asset more useful. After the next group of projects, you can see whether the same preparation issues persist. Readers get an explanation grounded in work your team actually performs.
That is the kind of content I would prioritize when the business already has several general guides on the topic.
Where structured data fits
Structured data supplies explicit labels for information on a page. Google uses it to understand page content and support eligible search features. Google’s introduction to structured data.
Give your developer a factual brief first. It should identify the organization, author, service or product, and the visible information that needs to be represented. Review the markup when that information changes.
Also keep content format separate from feature eligibility when planning a page. A visible FAQ can be useful because it answers customer questions. Google’s documentation records that its FAQ rich result stopped appearing on May 7, 2026. Google’s search documentation updates.
For the editorial work, focus on the questions readers need answered. For the technical work, check the current requirements of the feature being targeted. That gives both teams a clear assignment.
How do you measure AEO?
Measure AEO with a combination of platform data, a defined set of answer checks, and business outcomes. Record which pages receive exposure, how the business is described, which visits can be identified, and whether relevant inquiries follow.
Google’s generative AI performance report measures impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. It supports analysis by page, country, device, and date. Google’s generative AI performance report documentation.
For answer checks, write down the exact question and save the response. Record a brand mention and a linked citation as separate observations. Review whether the information about your business is accurate.
Choose a consistent reporting interval. In each review, identify the content changed during the period and the questions those changes were intended to answer. Then decide which pages need the next round of work.
Keep the business outcome specific. A request for a relevant consultation, product demonstration, or quote is easier to evaluate when the team has agreed on what makes it qualified.
Where should you start?
Start with one important service or product. Gather the questions customers ask before buying it. Read the pages that currently answer those questions and identify the missing information.
Next, speak with the person who knows the work best. Ask for examples, conditions, and records that support the answers. Turn that material into a factual brief and revise the most relevant pages.
Finally, establish a measurement record. Save the questions, the baseline, the publication dates, and the follow-up observations. Review the results with the people responsible for sales and delivery.
That is a manageable first AEO project. It gives your business clearer information, a defined set of customer questions, and evidence you can use to decide what comes next. If you want help choosing the starting point, bring the service you want to grow and the questions your team answers repeatedly. The plan should begin there.
